Johann Hari began to explore what causes depression in his best-selling book, “Lost Connections”.
As a child Hari spent many hours alone in a room crying uncontrollably, experiencing the symptoms of depression. The doctor he went to for treatment told him that his depression was due to a lack of serotonin in his brain. So, rather than looking at any other treatment options for Hari, the doctor told him that the depression could be alleviated with prescription antidepressants.
After he was given anti-depressants, he felt better but found that the sad thoughts began to leak back in until he went back for a higher dose of the medication. Hari again experienced some initial relief, but it didn’t last long. So again, rather than seeking other treatments for Hari, the doctor upped the dosage, leading to another period of relief, followed by a relapse into depression and yet another increase in the dosage.
When he wasn’t taking himself off to cry quietly, an anxious monologue would be running in his head. “Get over it,” it would say, “stop being so weak.”
It wasn’t until he was in his 30s that he thought of all the questions the doctor didn’t ask, such as: what was his life like? What was making him sad? What changes could be made to make life more tolerable? The push and pull between “reactive” depression (the kind that relates to our environment and life experience) and “endogenous” depression (where something goes wrong in the brain) forms the basis of the book “Lost Connections”, an eye-opening, highly detailed though sometimes frustrating investigation into the causes and cures of depression.
Hari later discovered that our moods might be the product of up to nine different factors, seven of which are in our psychology and our environment. These include feeling lonely, feeling controlled at work, and not getting enough access to the natural world.
He explained, “And while certainly chemical antidepressants have some value, and should remain on the table, we need to radically expand the menu of options for people who are depressed and anxious to deal with the deep, underlying reasons why we feel this way.”
In the book, Hari argues that the leading causes of depression are misunderstood, and have been for some time, thanks to the powerful pharmaceutical corporations emphasising the claim that depression is primarily due to a so-called “chemical imbalance” in the brain. No matter what they say, Hari proves that this isn’t the general cause of the everyday depression that so many people experience.

The above is something I have witnessed time and time again while working with clients, where 90% of the time we were able to not only reduce the number of antidepressants they took, or they ended up off them altogether, but through the therapy sessions, we put tools into place to relieve their depression.
