Why I'm So Excited About This Movie?
When gorgeous Natasha from Book Bonding told me the book that quite a few book clubs loved is now a movie, I started doing the happy dance. “Wow!” is all I can say about the movie The Children Act which will be in cinemas Australia wide from November 22nd.
I am so excited because not only did I love this book, but two of my favourite actors, from two of my favourite movies, Emma Thompson (Love Actually) and Stanley Tucci (The Devil Wears Prada), star in this ethically complicated legal drama. It is based on famous author Ian McEwan’s much-admired novel about a judge forced to determine a child’s fate.
"Is life more precious than dignity?"
Here is a review from the Sydney Film Festival:
Fiona Maye (Thompson) is a High Court judge who specialises in family law. Overly dedicated to her work, her marriage to Jack (Tucci) suffers, and when he tells her that he would like to have an affair, they become further estranged. At the same time, she presides over a particularly complicated case. Adam, a Jehovah’s Witness who’s just under 18, refuses the blood transfusion that could save his life. As he is still legally a child, Fiona can authorise the transfusion against Adam’s wishes and takes the original decision to visit him in the hospital before deciding. It is a meeting that will have a profound effect on both their lives in this humane, beautifully acted and riveting drama.
And a little scoop - Emma Thompson’s performance is brilliant, and many are saying she’ll be nominated for an Oscar.
