Madonna At 60 - Proving Age Is Just A Number
The one and only “Queen Of Re-Invention” Madonna (this woman only requires one name) and 7-time Grammy Award winner reached the milestone of 60 years young this week.
It seems like yesterday that I was watching an episode of Australia's "Countdown" and a gorgeous woman, styled to the max, came on to sing Holiday. By the time she reached the chorus, I was a fan. Over time, with a string of hits such as Borderline, Material Girl, Crazy For You, Like A Prayer, Papa Don't Preach and Like a Virgin, Madonna became our 80's icon.
And if being a brilliant singer and performer wasn’t enough, Madonna started many fashion trends. The conical bra will be forever associated with her! In 1990 she released the song “Vogue” on her second album “I’m Breathless”, which she went on to perform at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards with a flamboyant 18th century styling. Vogue became the fashion world's anthem. It has had over 84 million hits on YouTube and featured in the movie (one of my fav's) "The Devil Wears Prada."
That same year she appeared on the cover of Forbes Magazine with the headline "America's Smartest Business Woman”. This year in May, Forbes calculated her net worth at $590 million.
Madonna has also been a rebel over the years by pushing boundaries. She even brought controversy into the Catholic Church in her song "Like A Prayer" because she "acted in no appropriate manner."
''I like challenge and controversy - I like to tick people off." - Madonna
Whether you love Madonna or not, she is still performing better than most 20-year-olds and this 60 years young woman is another icon I admire.
What is your favourite Madonna song?
Here is mine, Vogue of course for you to enjoy. It's time to "Strike A Pose."
And just in case you want more, here is Madonna's outstanding performance at the 1990 MTV Awards.
Here I am at a fancy dress '80's party. I know Vogue was 1990, but hey, close enough. I had to wear the costume.
