What Is The Massive Hype About This “Must Read” Australian Novel?
An utterly beautiful novel of love, crime, magic, fate and coming of age, set in Brisbane's violent working-class suburban fringe, from one of Australia's most exciting new writers.
This is a book that I have heard a lot about. I have it now but the worst part is I have to wait for my husband to finish the book before I can read it (he stole it straight away and can't put it down). Natasha from Book Bonding has been raving about it, and I have heard reviews on Facebook. My cousin's friend said she turned her phone off for three days as she enjoyed it so much!
If you are a fan of the book "Jasper Jones", like Natasha and I are, then this is another book you are guaranteed to love.
A story of brotherhood, true love and the most unlikely of relationships, “Boy Swallows Universe” by Trent Dalton will be the most heartbreaking, joyous and nerve-wracking novel you will read all year.
It's Brisbane, Australia 1983: A lost father, a mute brother, a mum in jail, a heroin dealer for a stepfather and a notorious criminal for a babysitter.
Young Eli already has a complicated life, but it is going to become more complicated. Even though he is trying to grow into a good man and follow his heart, danger finds him. He is about to fall in love, but meets Tytus Broz, the local drug dealer, who throws a spanner in the works.
Just in case you are not heading off to your Independent bookstore already, here are a few reviews:
'Trent Dalton is the most extraordinary writer - a rare talent. A major new voice on the Australian literary scene has arrived.' Nikki Gemmell
‘An astonishing achievement. Dalton is a breath of fresh air - raw, honest, funny, moving, he has created a novel of the most surprising and addictive nature. Unputdownable.' David Wenham
'I couldn't stop reading from the moment I started, and I still can barely speak for the beauty of it. Trent Dalton has done something extraordinary here, writing with grace, from his own broken heart.' Caroline Overington
'Enthralling - a moving account of sibling solidarity and the dogged pursuit of love.' Geoffrey Robertson QC
"Stunning. My favourite novel for decades. Left me devastated but looking to the heavens." Tim Rogers
