Who Is Guru Dudu?
Can you imagine yourself disco dancing around the streets of Melbourne, or standing on the steps of St. Paul’s Cathedral belting out “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the top of your lungs?
Most of you would say ‘probably not’.
A couple of weeks ago in Melbourne over lunch and a movie, my gorgeous girlfriend and writer for Cazinc Tracey McLean (over the years we have enjoyed many crazy times together) told me about a Christmas present she’d received. It was tickets to a silent disco. All she knew was that herself and three friends were going to put headphones on and were then to be led around Melbourne, disco dancing to music that only they could hear, with a fun guy who calls himself Guru Dudu.
Guru Dudu is a lovable funny man who opens our “laughter meridians” through accessing the inner-child, particularly in group settings. He’s passionate about giving people permission to play and celebrate their creative and quirky selves.
I had a girl’s weekend coming up and so I checked this out for Mary and I for Friday night. Little did I know that for 90 minutes we would morph into crazy friends having a ball singing and dancing with total strangers. Others who joined us included a group of women celebrating a hen’s night, guys from overseas, a groovy lady celebrating her 70th birthday and “the Indian” who celebrated his 50th. It was Guru Dudu’s 5th birthday celebrations also, and gee-whiz did we celebrate.
We danced to Kylie, Abba, Village People, Michael Jackson, Queen and many more, including Right Said Fred as we walked down our makeshift catwalk to “I’m Too Sexy!”
Mary and I were discussing the experience over a meal at Chin Chin’s afterwards. We laughed and laughed about how when we put those headphones on, we removed all blinkers holding us back in life. Without the headphones, there is no way we would have sang and danced the way we did. The headphones allowed us to morph into a fabulous world where nothing else mattered other than having fun.
I thoroughly recommend the experience. To be honest, even though I love to dance, I had no idea I would enjoy Guru Dudu and his Silent Disco as much as I did!
But remember, someone is always watching!
