Are You Ready To Shake Your Groove Thing?
In 1994, we loved the sensational Australian comedy movie, starring Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp, about three friends who travel from Sydney to Alice Springs on an old battered bus, which they christened “Pricilla”.
The acting, the music, the comedy and tears over friendship, and the Oscar-winning costumes were brilliant and I was hooked. This movie became one of my all-time favorites.
Ten years ago, Simon and I travelled to Sydney for a five-day escape, our first in many years. My beautiful mum and our gorgeous friend Ivan paid for us to attend the show. Ivan, being the kind and thoughtful friend he is, decided to laminate our tickets with sparkles which I had to hand to the guy who commented “Gee, you have gone to some effort!”
The stage show is a story of three Sydney drag queens, Tick (David Harris) and Felicia (Euan Doidge), and an older transgender performer, Bernadette (Tony Sheldon), who travel in their flamboyant bus to Alice Springs, where they’ve been booked for a show by Tick’s wife. The trio are shocked as they leave their safe city life behind to face the characters of outback Australia.
I fell in love with these three friends again. I laughed, cried and sang along to disco classics - I Will Survive, Shake Your Groove Thing and Finally. So, when I knew it was coming to Melbourne as part of its 10th-anniversary tour after winning many awards on Broadway, I knew I had to go, and who I was going with!
Last Saturday, Simon and our gorgeous friends Ivan and Ken (read about our thirty years of friendship here) met at the Regent Theatre in Collins Street to attend the matinee show. And we were not disappointed. There were more songs added to the lineup, including some of our favorite Kylie songs. The acting, singing, dancing, sets and costumes (there are over 500) were outstanding. There were parts of the storyline and characters we had forgotten about and enjoyed all over again. From the moment the curtain went up until the end we were entertained.
A fabulous and feel good day with great friends that I wanted to share with you, and inspire you to book tickets. (Remember to bring your singing voice!)
The show is on in Melbourne until 29th April. Purchase tickets here.
