True Crime Podcasts To Listen To Over Summer
With the popularity of the podcast "The Teachers Pet," we have witnessed an explosion of podcasts, especially on true crime. It can be daunting flicking through all the podcasts trying to find one you love, especially if you are new to the world of podcasts. So now you have some downtime over summer, relaxing by the pool, walking along the beach, or just chilling at home it's time to put in your earplugs and tune in to some popular podcasts.
33 Patients. A Charming Surgeon. A Spineless System.
From the same network behind Dirty John, Dr Death takes a deep dive into the life of former American neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch, who's nickname is Dr Death. Duntsch is the surgeon behind numerable botched surgeries resulting in horrific, even fatal outcomes for his patients while operating out of a couple of hospitals in Dallas, Texas. Dr Death is about a medical system that failed to protect these patients at every possible turn so be prepared for some shocking revelations.
This true crime podcast about the 1999 murder of Baltimore high school girl Hae Min Lee is the podcast that launched the genre, capturing the ears and imaginations of listeners around the world and was showcased by one of our writers (and one of my besties), Tracey, last year in her "Your Essential Guide To Podcasts" article. Another brilliant investigative journalism podcast Tracey wrote about in her article.
A different seven episode podcast about a man named John B. McLemore who despises his Alabama town and decides to do something about it. I was mesmerised by the eloquent intelligence of John B, a tattooed, reclusive eccentric whose tales of murder and buried treasure have divided the Alabama town. I felt very voyeuristic listening to this podcast, but at the same time, I found it utterly compelling.
A gruesome murder case that is currently being adapted into a movie, Crimetown is an exceptionally compelling podcast about organised crime in Providence, Rhode Island.
The hosts, Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier, have excellent podcasting voices that make this compelling podcast one to add to your list.
Dirty John is an investigative journalism podcast reporting on the true story of "Dirty John" Meehan, an alleged con artist and sociopath who coaxed his way into successful, wealthy interior designer Debra Newell’s life. It may sound like a work of fiction; it’s that unbelievable. Look out for the TV series, coming to Netflix in Australia soon, starring our own Eric Bana as John Meehan.
And if this list isn't enough, there are more true crime podcasts to add to your library.
