What Is The Secret To Not Blowing Out On Holidays?
I love holidays; they are an excellent time for me to reflect on life, slow down, read books, add a touch of romance, and a time step away from the routine of life.
There is only one problem: I don't know about you, but when on holidays all I want to do is eat, are you relating?
And when I talk about eating, I am not craving the healthy fruit and vegetables I love to eat. I am talking about chips, chocolate and alcohol!!! Or when in Italy, add pasta and ice cream to the list.
Argh.........so how can we fulfil these cravings, still enjoy our holidays and stay slim?
The plan is to have fun, maybe put on a couple of kilo's, but the program is not to blow out during this time that you spend the next six months trying to lose the weight you gain.
So here is a list of what you can do to help you enjoy your time away, enjoy all foods and drinks and maintain your weight.
The secret is balance!
This 7-letter word is key to nearly everything for a happy life. If I am going to eat more junk food than usual, I balance this out with healthy foods.
I start the day with water, 2-3 glasses at least. Ok, I do have my one or two lattes, but drinking water at the start of the day sets you on a great course to manage your eight glasses, plus per day.
Food begins with a healthy bircher muesli topped with antioxidant filled berries, such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, or avocado on gluten-free toast, or a green juice or smoothie. A great way to put you back on track, especially if you have had one or more too many drinks the night before.
Speaking of drinking, I have to be careful with health reasons on the number of drinks I consume. Don't ever start drinking alcohol when you are dehydrated. You will drink way too fast and not enjoy the flavours of what is in your glass. Make sure you are well hydrated on water and then try to stick to only a couple of drinks. If you are in for a long day or night of celebrations, a great idea is to keep filling your wine or champagne glass with water. Your head and kidneys will thank you for it.
Back to food. Try to stick to a healthy eating plan with your three meals. Summer is a fabulous time to eat green and raw foods, especially in salads. This too will assist you to stay hydrated and will keep the cravings away. Rather than eat a full packet of chips, you may only want a couple or a piece of chocolate rather than the whole block to satisfy. You can still have fun, but not the calories.
Lastly, I am enjoying a break from the gym, especially 6 am classes! But after nine months of building up my strength, especially with my core at Pilates, I have downloaded a fantastic app for yoga called Asana Rebel. I paid under $100 for a full year worth of workouts. I chose the Fatburn program, which will ensure I stay active on holidays. It only takes 30 minutes, and all you need is a yoga mat, which can be purchased almost anywhere. The best part is you have the app for the whole of 2018. Walking is also a fun way to see more of your surroundings, so ditch the car keys for your runners, and before you know it, your 10,000 steps will be reached.
If you stick to the secret of balance, you can have your cake and eat it too. Have a fabulous time and enjoy because before we know it, we will be back to the routine of life.
We would love to hear what your secret is on holidays.
