8 Things You Need To Know About Teeth Hygiene
Teeth are one of the most essential items for your image. If you see someone with great teeth, you notice them. But more importantly, if you see someone who doesn't look after their teeth, others don't only notice them, they talk about them.
Unfortunately, as we age:
- Teeth become duller in appearance
- Teeth become discoloured via red wine, coffee, smoking and dark coloured foods.
- Gums shink and lose their shape
- Your smile disappears
- Long in the tooth appearance contributed to receding gums
- Lines appear around your lips
Sorry to put all that on you, but the good news is, like our skin, there are things we can do to prevent the above.
I spoke to my dentist, who I visit twice per year, plus I have my teeth cleaned twice per year also. I had terrible teeth as a child, so it has become necessary for me to look after them as an adult, especially after having braces. I wear plates at night, which I will do for the rest of my life to keep my teeth in the correct position.
Anyway, my dentist provided me with a list of home maintenance for me to share with you all.
1. Brush Regularly
He recommends twice per day to prevent the build-up of plaque on the surface of your teeth.
2. Travel Pack
Keep a travel bag of toothbrush and toothpaste in your car in case you have a meeting or facial you need to attend. Nothing is more of a turn off than food stuck in your teeth or coffee breath.
Did you know that flossing your teeth can take years off your age? Daily flossing improves plaque control and removes food debris from between your teeth, places your toothbrush can't reach. I know this sounds terrible, but to encourage you to floss, try starting off with "Piksters". Little brushes to start you flossing. Once you have flossed your teeth with one, place it near your nose. The smell is awful if you haven't been flossing. The smell is the food rotting in between your teeth. Does this inspire you?
4. Tooth Brushes
Change your toothbrush regularly, especially when the bristles become splayed or worn. Usually around every three months. Electric toothbrushes work better than manual. Look for one with a small head so that it can get around your mouth, and soft to medium bristles. Don't "brush" with your electric toothbrush. Just hold it on the areas and let it do the work for you.
Brush your teeth for two minutes to ensure you get to all the areas of your mouth. My hygienist recommends not rinsing at night to keep the enamel on your teeth to protect them while you sleep. Mouthwashes are not recommended, but if you do need to use one, look for one without alcohol, but contains fluoride.
6. Diet and Hydration
Yes, of course, I had to mention this one! Try to limit sugar, especially in between meals when you are not cleaning your teeth. Try to eat a healthy diet of fruit and vegetables. And we know what they say about apples. (Did you know that apples are one food that helps you to lose weight? Does that inspire you to snack on them?). And keep looking after your general health and well-being, including drinking plenty of water.
Enjoy having the confidence to smile every day. You now have a stylish wardrobe, gorgeous skin and hair, so why not have the style smile to go with it.
Dentist are lovely people, so why not visit them regularly? Prevention is better than a cure, so regular check ups with your dentist and hygienist will keep your teeth in perfect condition.
We hope you liked these reminders about teeth and it inspired you to look after your pearly whites. Please keep sharing our articles. A great one to pass onto the kids!
