How (And Why) Exercise Keeps You Young?
We saw this dynamic fitness guru on our screens every weekday in the 80’s, on the popular Australian TV program Aerobics Oz Style. Wendi Carroll was always the bubbly and fun instructor, who was full of energy and is one of the most active and gorgeous women you could ever meet. (see a video of Wendi in the 80's here).
Wendi hasn’t changed one bit. Simon and I caught up with Wendi while we were in Sydney last year. She still works out every day, has a huge following of fans at her gym, where Wendi still teaches classes and works as a personal trainer, and has the body we all strive towards. Her abdominals are what we all dream of, and she is a mother to gorgeous Josh, whom Wendi is extremely close with and proud of him. Josh too works out and is a model.
Wendi, a former dancer, first joined the fitness industry in 1979 when her boyfriend who became her husband introduced her to the gym. He was into weights, which didn’t suit women at the time, but it was there that Wendi discovered this new thing called aerobics. With her dance background, it was a perfect match for Wendi. After that, her life of lycra began.
Wendi is now 57 years young, so how has she maintained her fitness over the years?
Wendi still lives an active lifestyle. Over time, Wendi progressed from teaching aerobics to Barre Classes, TRX, Weight Classes, Pilates, stretching and body strength workouts, plus the uncountable personal training clients.
“You don’t have to give up anything you love to stay in shape. The secret is all about eating a healthy, but nothing crazy and restrictive, and of course move or exercise every day.”
Even if Wendi is not at the gym, she still moves every day, including the salsa dance classes she now attends on Sundays. She loves the Latin dancing, which is great fun and also gives your brain a workout.
“When you get older, it’s important to lower the impact of your workouts, but still keep exercising.”
Wendi has just launched a fantastic online program designed for women and men over 50.
The Zest 8-week online wellness program includes exercise programs, structured around Low-impact, moderate-intensity exercise. The program also includes a nutrition plan and a forum to answer your questions.
Wendi’s major motivation for the program was to encourage women to keep feeling healthy and looking after themselves.

“It’s better to wear out, not rust out.”
Ok, here is the question on everyone’s mind. I asked Wendi what she eats on an average day.
BREAKFAST: I get up at 5.30 am and will usually have oats in the form of porridge or a smoothie with berries, banana, coconut water, protein powder and chia seeds.
LUNCH: I like to create what I would have in a sandwich without the bread if I had toast for breakfast. Ingredients like chicken and salad.
Alternatively, I will have sushi with some edamame beans.
DINNER: Similar to lunch but usually with a bigger serving of protein so either chicken, fish or steak.
DESSERT: Ice cream!!
SNACKS: I always carry an apple and nuts on me.
