International Women's Day 2017 - How To Be Bold For Change
Today, March 8th, is not only the start of the French Film Festival, it is importantly International Women’s Day, and the theme this year is #BeBoldForChange.
The day represents continuation working towards a more inclusive, gender equal world. A world where every woman has rights; rights for education, to vote, and a world where every woman can live a happy and healthy life.
When I thought about being bold, there were numerous women who came to mind, many inspiring women whose friendships mean the world to me. There are a large number of women, world-wide, working towards gender equality, but with being bold as the theme for today, Lady Gaga is the woman I wanted to write about.
Lady Gaga is one of the most influential singers today, but ever since she roared onto the scene she has made it a huge part of her persona to be recognised for her crazy outfits and outrageous get-ups, pushing the limits for years at all public appearances.
Right or wrong, this talented musician and dancer, in a short period of time, has become one of the biggest fashion icons and a business savvy divas of the 21st century, and a modern day "feminist", who is sending strong positive messages to young women worldwide.
With a very loyal fan base, which supports her in every aspect of her creativity, Lady Gaga has transformed her life from an up and coming singer from Manhattan’s Lower East Side, to the larger-than-life icon and spokesperson she is today.
Did you know that one of Lady Gaga’s proudest accomplishments is educating people on the value of uniqueness and individuality? She has made a huge difference in many lives, exposing a confidence in all elements of her life, with her talent and self-love, asserting “it is ok to be different”.
Sometimes, we need to remind ourselves that it is ok to make blunders in daring to wear or do something distinctive. Letting go of the need to be perfect is where you will grow. To #BeBoldForChange, we can learn from Lady Gaga that is ok to be unique and to be an individual, to stand out in the crowd, and to embrace what life has to offer, no matter what others think. Be bold, be brave, be you.
Remember when the Spice Girls, with their "Girl Power" inspired us? I hope Lady Gaga is inspiring our daughters, and young women, so if you have someone who would benefit from this article, a strong young woman who is "Born To Be Brave" please share it with them.
We are women, let’s celebrate.
