How To Achieve Your Own Award Winning Style

How To Achieve Your Own Award Winning Style

You receive an invitation in the mail, or book to go to a formal charity event, or a ball.  An invitation to an official event can be exciting, however, can also be stressful not knowing how to plan your overall appearance.

Styling clients for events was so much more than the dress or suit.  Your complete appearance requires polishing from head to toe, inside and out.

I love a red carpet, and one of my favourites is the Academy Awards, so while watching the 2017 awards, inspiration came my way to communicate how to achieve your own award winning style.

Once you accept your invitation, immediately, you need to plan, therefore here is an action proposal, for you to look and feel your best for the occasion.

 Women

1.    Your Dress

What is the overall style you would like to achieve?  It is great to study magazines, Pinterest, or the web, but you also need to be realistic.  Think about the style would appear on you, your body and skin toning.

2.    Shape-wear

All of the A-listers all over the world wear shape-wear.  I have broken many a nail slipping shape-wear on clients.  Shape-wear makes or breaks an outfit.  Once you have found your dress, ask for it to be placed on hold until you purchase shape-wear to suit.  Then return to the store, and re-try on the dress wearing the shape-wear.

Shape-wear is like heels, you need to practice wearing the pieces, until they, (pardon the pun), become like second skin.

3.    Accessories

Accessories are as important as your dress, as they can make, or break your appearance.  Please take your time accessorising your outfit, as they complete your look.

The correct shoes are important.  Only wear heels if you can walk elegantly in them.  If you are not used to wearing heels, look for a pair that have a slightly larger heel, or a strap over the top of your foot, so they fit you like slippers.  Look for a colours to compliment your dress.

When selecting a clutch, think elegance.  Straps over the shoulder can reduce the elegance.  It is called a “clutch bag” for a reason, for you to hold, not an “over the shoulder bag”.  Again, look for a colour to compliment your dress, and not dominate your dress.

Coco Chanel quoted, “Look in the mirror and take something off”.  Choose either earrings, or a necklace, not both, especially if earrings are large.  They make a statement on their own.

4.    Hairstyle

When booking your hair style for the night, please make an appointment with your hair stylist a few weeks before.  Take in a photo of you in your outfit so they can see whether you need your hair down, or pulled up, or what style will compliment you, and your dress.

5.    Skin

Hydrated skin is great looking skin!  Drink plenty of water the week before, or go on a juice detox for a few days.  Hydrating your skin from the inside works wonders.  Your hair will also thank you.

Book a facial or two before the event, or if time poor, purchase a great mask for home.  A muscle banding facial will tighten and firm your skin, always a great choice.

Exfoliating the dead, outer layer of skin allows new skin to come alive.  Body and face exfoliation are fabulous.

6.    Fake Tan

Look slimmer and younger instantly with a fake tan.  Please book one weeks before the event to guarantee the colour suits you, and you don’t rock up to the event looking like an “Oompa Loompa” from Charlie and the Chocolate factory!

7.    Nails

Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure.  Nothing breaks a look more than dry skin on your hands and feet.  Moisturise your whole body, especially these areas, which tend to dry out quickly.

8.    Enjoy

Have a wonderful night, knowing you look and feel fabulous.

Men

1.    Black tie suit

Patience is the order of the day when purchasing your black-tie suit, please allow time for adjustments.  One of the biggest mistakes men make when wearing a suit, is an incorrect fit.  Too small or large, and not the right length.

The other biggest mistake are the buttons of a suit.  Only wear double breasted if you are slim, as they widen your appearance.

Wear your shoes when being measured for leg length.  The length should cover half your shoes, and come down to a quarter of an inch off the floor.

Think “always, sometimes, never” with buttons.  If you have three buttons on your jacket, do up the top and middle, or just the middle.  If you have two buttons, just do up the top one.  One button, go for it!  Never do up the bottom button, and they should only be done up when standing up.  Undo your buttons when sitting down.

Ensure the shirt fits comfortably around your neck, so you can do up the top button, feeling comfortable, and without fainting on the night.

2.    Accessories

Opt for a bow tie, or a tie to suit you.  If you are not sure on width, go for a medium size tie.  But the general rule of thumb is, if you are a wider guy, wear a wider tie, and a thinner guy, wear a thin tie.  Your tie length should sit just above your belt buckle.

Purchase sophisticated and smart cuff-links, silver, and/or black.  They are not designed to be a statement piece, and accompany your outfit, so bright colours are out.

Black shoes and socks, in great condition, are the order of the day.  I know coloured socks are in, but for a refined black tie look, like your cuff-links, wear black.

3.    Grooming

Have a good look in the mirror and see if grooming is required.  Do you need a wax?  Eyebrows especially.  You need two eyebrows, not one.  Also, a clean shave, a professional shave if you opt for stubble, or does your beard require a trim?  Remove all nose hairs and ear hairs.  Is a haircut in order?

4.    Skin

Real men have facials and great looking, hydrated skin.

Treat yourself to a manicure, and why not a pedicure while you are there?  Nothing breaks a look more than dry skin on your hands and feet.  Moisturise your whole body, especially these areas, which tend to dry out quickly.

6.    Enjoy

Have an excellent night, feeling proud of your style.
