How To Transform Your Life and Work
Picture this: You are usually the confident person who rarely worries, is full of self-belief and can make decisions, right or wrong, with your career, family and wealth creation. But one day a decision you've made starts to worry you.
It's all you can focus on. Your breathing becomes shallow and anxiety kicks in.
Sound familiar? Then here’s something you might want to try.
Just count to five. Yes, that is all it is, count to five.
In situations where you feel a detrimental urge, such as a desire to binge on fast food when you know you should eat something healthy, or to hit the snooze button when you'd planned to get up early to exercise, merely count to five. Close your eyes and slowly count one, two, three, four, five.
This simple method is a powerful way to turn your attention away from unhelpful temptations and back to the things that bring you closer to what you want in life. Let’s say you’re offered a piece of delicious cake but don’t want a sugar high. Take a moment, count to five, and you’ll be able to resist the urge and stick to your healthy meal plan.
Why does counting to 5 work?
While you are counting to five, your brain comes back to the now. It makes you stop and focus on what is truly important. Staying in bed over getting up and exercising? Eating the junk food (which could be gone before you count to five as we often throw something into our mouths before thinking about it) over healthy food.
Counting to five is also a brilliant way to focus when speaking. It can give you the "filter" we often require. Have you heard of "The power of pause" or "think before you speak?" Counting to five is the secret.
My beautiful friend Ivan and I always say,
"90% of what we worry about doesn't happen."
The straightforward technique of counting to five works well if you are stressed. Stop, count to five, and take deep breaths. Over the years I have recommended this simple technique for clients with anxiety, with outstanding results.
Once you begin to incorporate the 5 Second Rule into your life, you'll discover it takes just five seconds to:
- Become confident
- Break the habit of procrastination and self-doubt
- Beat fear and uncertainty
- Stop worrying and feel happier
- Share your ideas with courage
By implementing counting to five in your life, you’ll be on the way to creating new and better habits. I applied the five-second rule into my life after reading "The 5 Second Rule" book by Mel Robbins.
The 5 Second Rule (2017) is a transformative guidebook to taking action, changing your behaviour and living life with less fear and more courage. The tips contained in it are memorable, easy to implement and instantly effective. Anyone can start using them today to take control of their life and move confidently toward a brighter tomorrow.
Take five minutes of your life to view this video of Mel and begin to use the five-second rule daily. The changes are miraculous.
