Can Your Activewear Become A Fashion Crime?
Do you wear your active wear because you don’t know how to put together a casual and comfortable style?
I have had a lot of women write into me stating they have lost their way with casual and comfortable clothes, so they have resorted to wearing active wear everyday because it is easy.
Last Friday I chatted with gorgeous fashion designer of Texas Johnny The Label, Julian and his assistant, George, (who worked with Hugo Boss Fashion). We spoke about our favorite topic, fashion over a bottle of bubbles, (well, it was Friday afternoon, a girl has to have some fun with the guys).
All three of us have all worked with women who have lost their way. And what we have noticed is that rather than wearing fabulous, stylish outfits, they have resorted to wearing activewear, 24/7.
According to Julian and George:
“Women who have fallen into the trap into the new movement of activewear daily, including tracksuit pants, sweaters, hoodies, anything that is cotton base is not keeping real to their inner goddess. It is only saying I am too busy to put myself first and letting life roll them over. Please don’t sell yourself out.
Activewear should only be 5-10% of your wardrobe. Keep active wear active in the gym. Please don’t lose your way; it is time to put an everyday effort into your wardrobe. Most gyms have showers and change rooms for you to take the 5-10 minutes to go about your day looking and feeling empowered.
We are not saying not to wear active wear, but purchase items, which are comfortable to wear outside of the gym.
That is what the whole fashion industry is about.”
We all agreed, to construct a stylish wardrobe, it is essential to have your necessary items, these can be from Zara, Witchery, or the likes, but the “wow” items will make these crucial items look fabulous on you. (learn how to build a core wardrobe on a budget here).
Investment pieces will make your outfit and bring out you, the wearer and your identity.

What is not comfortable about wearing a great pair of jeans, especially boyfriend jeans, or fitted jeans with a bit of stretch.
Great fashion is comfortable.
A gorgeous, intelligent, and "yummy mummy" came into the boutique today who had the pressure of the world on her shoulders. She has work and family which she always puts first, and never invests into herself. You should have seen the look on her face today when she realized she hadn't lost anything entering a new chapter in her life.
Julian’s client's face came to life when we styled her into outfits of investment pieces, linked in with her basics and some gorgeous sexy items to wear on her date nights with her husband. Watching her blossom to a magnificent woman was brilliant.
What was interesting was how much she was blown away that we were the same size, just different body shapes. What was even more interesting was how she walked into the shop feeling pretty low about herself and left walking on cloud nine.
You can change for your inner goddess.
You can change for your self-worth.
A working wardrobe does not have to cost a fortune. The secret is to have a balanced diet of investment pieces, basics, statement pieces (a loud top or dress that makes you look great in it), activewear for the gym, and then incorporate your signature styles with your mix and match items.
EG simple as a basic tee.
Don’t think as something to wear with tracksuits and jeans.
A basic tee is your best friend in your wardrobe.
A basic tee can be worn with a jacket, knotted to the side, tuck it into your jeans with a cute belt, or over bathers. Funk up your look with huge earrings or a fabulous necklace.
Ok, not all of us will tuck in a tee to jeans. But this can be a flattering look, so give it a go, or try with a pair of drop crotch pants, (A new world of comfort which I love. My husband thinks I am wearing a nappy!!! What does he know about fashion??? lol), or leather pants.
According to Julian, the best investment pieces are:
A leather jacket
A pair of stretch leather jeans or pants
Natural fiber basics or knits.
Tops that make you look amazing.
A gorgeous dress.
I loved this comment from Julian, “Dolce Gabbana doesn’t design activewear” – so it is not in fashion.
He wants women to feel fabulous when running around town, picking up the kids, coffee with the girls, shopping, cooking dinner in a fashionable style which makes her shine, rather than feeling ordinary in activewear.
Everything this outfit says is “I look good, I put in the effort, and I have dressed for myself.”
If you are on a budget, start with a basic t-shirt. You can trick up with a pair of comfortable pants or jeans. Culottes, including wide-leg, are huge for SS17, and are amazingly comfy and sets off a pair of ankle boots. It takes it to a next level. Such a fashion-forward look to bring into your everyday wardrobe. I noticed they were huge in Italy. Women wore them regularly, with comfortable and stylish shoes.
So go ahead. Why not take the plunge? Please don’t wait until you lose weight, or until your bonus comes in. Make the move today. Maybe start with items you already have in your wardrobe. Take little steps, start with a few things. A blazer will feel different to a windcheater, but once you are used to it, you will love it.
Go ahead, give it a go and let us know how fabulous you feel.
Akira Isogawa is one of Australia’s most prominent contemporary fashion designers. His outlook on fashion is inspirational. He looks at style as in a very organic, natural sense.
He says that if he is feeling sad and blue, he will wear red. And red and blue together make purple, which is natural color, which makes him feel happy in his day.
We hope you incorporate some red into your day, and like Acura, feel happy. Isn’t that what life is all about?
